There is a big festival coming up this week that is celebrated in China and many other spots throughout Asia. In fact, Dragon Boat festival is actually quite popular around the world!
Yes, Dragon Boat festival is almost here and people are already getting their Zongzi ready in preparation for the holiday.
Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guizhou, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore have dragon boat races each year in celebration of the
festival. Did you know that many of the teams that race include members from America, Canada,Australia and the UK?
Vancouver, Canada hosts a huge Dragon Boat festival each year. It’s held next to the city center on the waters of False Creek. Locals and many tourists attend the festival each year to watch the race, enjoy live music, partake in children’s activities and, of course, eat delicious food.
Auckland, New Zealand is very proud of the fact that their Dragon Boat Association has 500 members. So you can imagine that they take racing during the Dragon Boat festival pretty serious.
Sydney, Australia and Berlin, Germany are also big fans of Dragon Boat racing. Both cities host races with thousands of participants—however, these races are held at different times of the year, not just during the festival.
My hometown of Portland, Oregon on the west coast of America is also home to a few Dragon Boat teams. They just had their Annual Rose Festival where the city’s Dragon Boat teams compete against one another, but the big race takes place in September.
