1. I’m pretty good, thank you.

“I’m fantastic, wonderful, excellent, absolutely swimming in sublimity.”

boastful

adj.

humble

adj.

2.I couldn’t be better/ never been better.

当你感觉特别积极的时候,你可以这样回应:“I couldn’t be better/never been better.”,这表明你真的感觉很好。“Life has been treating you well and you are loving it.”

“You may or may not actually feel that way, but it still shows that you have a rather positive outlook on life.”

3.I’m better than I deserve.

I’m better than I deserve.”

每次戴夫在他的广播节目中都会有人问:“How are you, Dave?”,他会回答说: “Better than I deserve.”

4.I can’t complain.

By saying this we acknowledge that things may not be the absolute best, but we also shouldn’t complain too much. This shows honesty and modesty at the same time.

5.I’ve been better. /I’m hanging in there.

当事情不顺利的时候,我们想要诚实面对我们的困难,我们可以说——“I’ve been better.”,西方人习惯下意识地说:“I’m good, thanks.”

我们也可以说,“I’m hanging in there.”。

“This tells our listener that we have been encountering some obstacles, but we are still persevering.”。

6.Just the same old,same old.

“Just the same old, same old”。

Oh, I’m good. Still in school, studying a lot. Still working. Still dating this guy. Still not sleeping enough…”

如果有人问我: “Hey, what’s new with you?”,我只是说:“Just the same old, same old”。

Well everyone, that concludes today’s episode. After this week and last, you now have some new and creative ways to both inquire about someone’s life, and how to answer when someone inquires about yours.
